FriendlyGerman Etiquette - First Meetings
The etiquette of the people of a country is largely the function of
the culture prevalent there. German culture exhorts its people to
masters of planning. Every German typically knows what he will be doing
at a given time on a given day. Planning provides a sense of security to
the Germans, and they abhor changes in their plans. Rigid rules and
regulations have been established, allowing people to always know what
is expected and plan their life accordingly. Knowledge of these rules is
critical for a business or social meeting. Often, going against the
established etiquette leads to much tension. If the purpose of the
meeting is business-related, it might even lead to break down of
negotiations. Following the etiquette, and therefore learning about it,
is essential to gain social acceptance in Germany.
